Originating in the early 1900’s, pneumatic control devices have been the backbone of commercial HVAC control systems. Still common today, primarily as the result of maintained and additions to existing systems, pneumatic controls provide a basic 20 psi powered environment to operate thermostats and actuators alike. They are relatively simple and reliable products and inherently provide modulation capabilities.
Their main source of air is generally from a single or duplex compressor with an air storage tank that provides 80-90 psi air to a pressure reducing valve at 20 psi. Typically the air is also passed through an air and water filter and a refrigerated air dryer.
These are mechanical devices that over a period of time require calibration and maintenance.
